Telemedicine Q & A

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a form of medical care that allows you to use different forms of technology — either phone calls, video platforms, or live chats — to discuss medical symptoms, ask questions, and get medical care from the comfort of your home or office.

Dr. Smalley uses HIPAA-compliant encrypted software and messaging systems to ensure your personal information is kept confidential.

Telemedicine can be used when it’s hard to get to the office for an in-person visit, either due to travel, lack of access to transportation, or the need to stay home due to illness or caring for others at home.

In many cases, Dr. Smalley can provide all of the care you need so you don’t have to leave home or the office.

What telemedicine services are available?

Dr. Smalley provides consultation services and prescription medication management through telemedicine. This care can be beneficial if you’re recovering from or being treated for:

  • Opioid addiction
  • Substance abuse
  • Migraines
  • Neuropathy
  • Dementia
  • Seizure disorders

With telemedicine, you can enjoy the benefits of easy access to your doctor and continuity of care when you need it most. Dr. Smalley accepts new patients as well and incorporates a thorough consultation during your first visit to understand your health challenges or symptoms.

How does telemedicine work?

Once you schedule your first visit, Dr. Smalley sends you the appropriate intake paperwork by email to establish your patient file through the telemedicine software.

He includes instructions for setting up and accessing the software so you’re able to use the video system during your appointment.

About five minutes before your appointment begins, you’ll log into the software and Dr. Smalley will contact you to start your visit at the scheduled time.

Your visit may last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on your medical concerns and whether you’re a new or current patient.

At the end of your appointment, Dr. Smalley provides appropriate recommendations for your care, including new or updated prescriptions, as needed.

Can I get a prescription refill during a telemedicine visit?

Yes, Dr. Smalley provides new prescriptions and prescription refills when needed. He may need to complete a more thorough evaluation during your visit if you’re a new patient or have new symptoms that require a different prescription.
